Dave Wooden is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Virginia. He works with adult individuals and couples and specializes in helping people resolve issues around life transition, life meaning, relationship difficulties, anxiety and depression.

After a successful career in the software industry helping people resolve complex technical issues, he came to discover his true passion of helping people with the complexities of life. Now in the field of psychotherapy, Dave has gained profound experience working with relationships, existential questions, neurodiverse individuals, those in recovery from substance abuse, anxiety and depression.

As a relationship counselor for couples, Dave practices Emotional Focused Therapy (EFT). EFT is a cutting-edge, evidence-based psychotherapy approach. It was developed in tandem with the science of adult attachment – a powerful theory of personality and intimate relationships. As the counselor for you and your partner, you will find that Dave is a gentle and attentive helper who takes his time to truly understand each partner’s underlying needs and wounds within the relationship. He will join with you to help recognize the negative cycle that you may find your relationship is stuck in, help you discover new pathways to mutual communication and trust, and ultimately help you find new possibilities and positive cycles that can allow your relationship to flourish.

Dave brings an integrative approach to his work with individuals, which include elements of mindfulness, existentialism, person-centered therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and EFT. To both his individual and couples work, you will find that Dave brings a grounded and comforting presence. You will feel truly heard and understood, maybe for the first time, and come to recognize through Dave’s mindful approach that we can all discover healing through awareness.

Dave received his undergraduate degree at the University of Maryland and his Master’s degree at Johns Hopkins University, both in computer science. After his career in computers and software, he received his second Master’s degree at Radford University in clinical mental health counseling. In his free time, Dave can be found exploring the DC metro area by bike. He also enjoys reading, music, travel, and creative writing of both prose and poetry.
